A critique is a good place to start if you’re looking for candid feedback but know you’re probably not ready for hands-on structural or line editing.

I’ve written detailed critiques for authors seeking chapter-by-chapter feedback, as well as broad-strokes critiques for those seeking a more general assessment. I’m happy to critique book-length or shorter-form works. We can discuss what best suits your needs when you send me a query.

With fiction and narrative nonfiction, I evaluate such elements as structure and story arc, point of view, pacing, voice, character development, description, and dialogue.

With expository or technical nonfiction, I evaluate thesis, content, structure, pacing, logic, continuity, and tone.

My critique—sent in the form of a letter—will point out strengths and weaknesses, and offer suggestions for improving problem areas. At your request, I can also address specific questions or concerns you may have about the manuscript.

A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.
